What Czech law requires

The rule is written as two conditions at once, and it only applies when both are met.

The first condition is calendar-based: from 1 November to 31 March. The second is factual: there is a continuous layer of snow, ice, or frost on the road, or the weather makes their appearance likely. On a dry January day on clean asphalt, the obligation formally does not arise; in wet snowfall on 2 November, it does.

The tyre requirement is also two-part. A tyre must be marked as winter — both the old M+S marking and the mountain-and-snowflake symbol are recognised — and it must have a tread depth of at least 4 millimetres. This is a special threshold specific to winter tyres; the general technical minimum for any tyre is lower, and you cannot rely on it in winter.

Snow chains are mandatory not by terrain but by sign. The requirement applies only on specific stretches marked with the relevant road sign, and it lifts at the sign that cancels it. There is no general Czech rule of "chains only" in the mountains.

Breaking the requirement carries an on-the-spot fine — according to current police guidance, up to two thousand crowns handled as a block procedure. For a renter, the practical risk lies elsewhere: after an incident on unsuitable tyres, the question of whether your speed matched the conditions comes up automatically.

Why tyres matter more than drive

The order of importance comes from physics, not preference.

All-wheel drive sends torque to all four wheels and helps you pull away, accelerate, and hold a line under power. It plays no part in braking and almost no part in cornering at a constant speed — there, only the contact patch between tyre and road does the work.

That produces an uncomfortable rule for SUV owners: an all-wheel-drive car on summer tyres accelerates on snow better than a rear-wheel-drive car, and brakes about as poorly. A false sense of confidence when accelerating, combined with an ordinary braking distance, is the combination behind most winter trouble.

The reverse holds too. A rear-wheel-drive coupé on good winter tyres drives normally on a cleared road; problems start on an uncleared climb, where the drive axle does not carry enough load.

What all-wheel drive actually gives you

Three situations where the difference is immediate, and one where it is not.

Pulling away on a climb. A snow-covered street with a slope, a traffic light on a hill, leaving a hotel car park in the Krkonoše — this is where all-wheel drive turns a hopeless situation into a routine one.

Accelerating on packed snow. Torque is split between the axles, wheelspin is reduced, and the car gathers speed without the electronics intervening at every metre.

Stability in a corner under power. An all-wheel-drive car is less prone to spinning out on a careless throttle input — which is why it forgives more mistakes.

And the one place all-wheel drive gives nothing at all: braking. Stopping distance on ice is determined by the tyres and by how the anti-lock braking system works. An SUV does not stop faster than a coupé, and given its extra mass, sometimes it stops slower.

Clearance: where it helps and where it hurts

Ground clearance matters in two specific cases.

The first is uncleared snow. As long as the layer sits below the clearance line, the car drives through it; once the body starts resting on the snow, the wheels are unloaded and traction disappears regardless of drive type. For parking at a mountain hotel after an overnight snowfall, the difference between a low and a tall body is decisive.

The second is a snow ridge. Road-clearing machinery leaves compacted ridges along lane edges and at exits, and a low front overhang catches them first.

Clearance gets in the way in the same places it always does: a tall body handles crosswinds worse, has a higher centre of gravity, and is less predictable in a sudden manoeuvre on a slippery road. An SUV's winter advantage lies in traction and visibility, not in handling.

Low sports cars deserve a separate note: what hurts them in winter is not clearance on its own, but the combination of clearance, a long front overhang, and low-profile tyres that are sensitive to potholes hidden under snow.

The two BMW M3s appear in different rows on purpose: despite the identical name, one car's listing states M xDrive and the other's states rear-wheel drive. In winter these are different cars, and it is the specific listing that needs checking, not the model.

The city in winter

Prague in winter means wet cobblestones, de-icing agents, slush at the kerbs, and tram tracks that turn slippery faster than asphalt does.

For a city scenario, drive type barely matters. A front-wheel-drive compact copes no worse than an all-wheel-drive SUV, and it is easier to park: winter narrows every lane, because snow and parked cars eat into the road width.

What does matter is heating and visibility. Mirrors, the windscreen, washer jets, and working demisting do more for you than an extra driven axle. A convertible loses its point in winter: the roof stays up, rear visibility is worse, and everything else is the same as an ordinary coupé.

Rear-wheel-drive cars in the city are hindered less by snow itself than by uneven grip: one side of a junction is cleared, the other isn't, and the car pulls away unevenly.

Daylight is also worth remembering: in December and January much of your driving falls in the dark, and a wet road with glare from streetlights reads worse than a dry one. This favours a calmer pace and extra time in the plan rather than a particular model, but in practice it shapes a trip more than the choice between two similar bodies.

One more city detail: underground car parks. In winter they win twice over — the car doesn't sit under snow, and the morning doesn't start with a scraper and a warm-up. For a low body this is an extra argument, because after snowfall the entry ramp becomes the most slippery point on the route.

Motorway and mountains

A winter trip out of town splits into two distinct scenarios.

A cleared motorway. The D1 to Brno, the D5 to Plzeň, the D8 to Dresden are serviced in winter and, in normal weather, can be driven by any car on proper winter tyres. The real constraint lies elsewhere: mountain-pass sections above 600 metres — the climb near Přimda on the D5, the Krušné hory on the D8 — change weather sharply, and snow arrives there before it does in Prague.

A mountain road. The climb into the Krkonoše follows an ordinary two-lane road, the I/14, with gradients and stretches under repair. Here, all-wheel drive and a tall body stop being a preference and become a working requirement — as does a time buffer, because in winter such a road takes longer than its distance suggests.

For a mountain destination it is worth discussing the car and route in advance: itineraries are put together around the date and the weather, not from a fixed list. Which cars are available for winter can be confirmed when booking.

What not to take in winter

A rear-wheel-drive sports car for a mountain trip. This is not a question of skill but of grip: on an uncleared climb, there is nothing to pull away with.

An open top for the sake of an open top. From November to March the roof stays up, and you end up with an ordinary coupé with a smaller boot.

The most powerful car available. In winter, excess torque works against the driver: the electronics have to keep damping wheelspin, and the car moves in jerks where a calmer engine would simply move.

A car without checking the tyres. All-wheel drive, ground clearance, and a model's reputation are no substitute for a tyre set that meets the requirements. If this isn't known, it needs settling before pickup, not on the way out of the city.
